20 Minute Decluttering Checklist
Clutter isn’t just about how your home looks, it affects how you feel too. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone, a cluttered home can also mean;
Stress and mental overwhelm
Decision fatigue
Wasted time looking for things
A constant sense of being behind
Unnecessary overbuying
When your home feels calm and organised, it has a ripple effect, helping you feel more calm, less overwhelmed, and more in control of your day, also;
Cleaning is so much easier
You can find things quickly
Life runs more smoothly
It saves you money in the long run
However, between work, family life, and everything in between, most people simply don’t have the time or energy for a full house overhaul.
Quick Win Areas to Tackle
Set aside just 20 minutes at a time (not every day, just whenever you can). With each session, you’ll build momentum, feel less overwhelmed, and start to see your space differently. Little by little, it all adds up to a calmer, more organised home, and you’ll begin to notice how much easier life feels with less.
Below are a few simple areas to help you get started. This guide focuses on the kitchen and laundry, along with some easy wins throughout the rest of the home. I’ve intentionally left out wardrobes and children’s playrooms, as those are much bigger projects that deserve more time and energy when you’re ready.
Kitchen
Dispose of any cracked or chipped cups and donate the ones you never use. Repeat for glasses, delph and cutlery.
Review unused kitchen utensils, often we have multiples that are just not needed.
Dispose of expired food from the fridge and your presses.
Declutter and organise mismatched food containers. Match lids to containers, if it doesn't have a match, let it go. I like to keep all lids together and stack containers to maximise space.
Declutter under the sink, if you have multiples of the same half empty cleaning products, mix them to reduce the number of bottles.
Review your tea towel drawer/press. Older or stained tea towels. I keep these separate and use for deep cleaning jobs.
Review your cookbook collections. Donate any books you don't use. Those in bad condition, recycle.
Laundry
Sort through worn out bath and hand towels (Note: Cut up and use as cleaning rags or some charity shops take old socks, towels and bed linen, call ahead and check).
Review odd socks, if you haven’t seen the pair in months, let them go. Do this once a month to stay on top of it.
Declutter old or worn underwear.
Sort through winter coats and jumpers, if you have space, hang at the back of your wardrobe, if you are tight on space, vacuum pack and store elsewhere. Donate what no longer fits or suits your style to charity.
Check pegs and dispose of any unbroken ones.
Other Areas Around the Home
Declutter one surface (kitchen counter, hallway table).
Pick one drawer and clear it out.
Dispose of newspapers/magazines (use these to wrap items going to charity amd recycle items you don’t use).
Sort through toiletries and bin anything that had expired. If you have unopened items (check if your local charity shop will take these).
Go through your medicine box and remove expired medication (check if your local pharmacy takes this).
Your Quick Wins Checklist
A more organised home doesn’t happen overnight, but small, consistent steps can make a big difference to how your space feels. Use this guide as a simple starting point to kick‑start decluttering in your home. Click the image below to download.
Remember, you don’t need hours of free time. You don’t need to do it all. Even one drawer, one shelf, or a few items from the list can shift how your home feels and that’s what creating an organised home is really about.
Decluttering Top Tips
Before you start, grab four boxes or bags and categorise by keep, sell, donate, or dump. It makes decision making much easier as you go.
The items for donation, move them out of the house immediately!
Keeping on top of the clutter - each evening grab a laundry basket, as you move around the house, pop anything into it that belongs in another room. When you’re finished, go back and return everything to its proper place.
