Wardrobe Refresh: 7 Simple Steps to Transition from Summer to Autumn/Winter
As the temperatures begin to drop, now is the perfect time to give your wardrobe a seasonal refresh. Taking a little time to swap out your summer clothes and organise your wardrobe can help you see exactly what you own and ensure your favourite autumn and winter pieces are ready to wear.
Here are some simple steps to make the transition smooth and stress-free.
1. Start with a Wardrobe Edit
A seasonal changeover is the perfect opportunity to review what you have and clear out anything you no longer need.
Ask yourself:
Does it still fit?
Is it torn, stained, or beyond repair?
Did I wear it last year?
To help make this stage easier, create separate piles for keeping, donating, selling or repairing. By editing your wardrobe regularly, you'll free up valuable space and make it easier to find the items you actually want to wear.
2. Wash Clothes Before Putting Them Away
Before storing summer clothes or bringing winter items back into your wardrobe, make sure everything is clean.
Even if clothes appear clean, the likes of suncreams & deodorant stains can settle over time. Washing your clothes before storage helps keep them fresh and ready to wear next season. Likewise, give any winter clothing that has been stored away a quick wash or refresh before hanging it back in your wardrobe.
3. Rotate Your Wardrobe for the Season
As the seasons change, your wardrobe should change with them. Bring your autumn/winter clothing into easy-to-reach spaces and move summer items into storage or if you have a large wardrobe, dedicate a section for out of season items. By keeping the clothes you wear most often visible and accessible makes getting dressed quicker and helps you make better use of your wardrobe.
This simple wardrobe rotation not only saves time each morning but also helps reduce clutter and makes it easier to see exactly what you have.

4. Short on Space? Vacuum Pack Summer Clothes
If storage space is limited, vacuum storage bags are a great solution for packing away summer clothes and reducing bulk. For those with more space, labelled storage boxes or under-bed containers work just as well, everything is kept together making next season's swap much easier.
5. Group by Category (and then by colour)
One of the simplest organising systems is to group similar items together. When clothes are stored by category, it's much easier to see what you have, avoid overbuying, and put outfits together quickly, for a more elevated wardrobe, store clothes by colour.
6. Make a Shopping List but Adopt the One-In, One-Out Rule
As you sort through your wardrobe, make note of anything that needs replacing. Knowing exactly what you need helps prevent impulse purchases later. For every new item you add, consider donating or recycling one you no longer wear. It’s a simple rule that keeps clutter at bay.
7. Keep a Few Transitional Pieces Out
Irish weather can be unpredictable, I mean look at this September so far, it’s so humid and dry, so don't rush to pack everything away. Keep a few lighter layers within easy reach for the mild autumn days.
A Little Effort Now Saves Time Later
A seasonal wardrobe refresh doesn't have to take all day. By editing what you own, washing before storing, rotating clothing for the autumn/winter season, and organising by category, you'll create a wardrobe that's easier to maintain and much easier to use.
Remember, the goal isn't a perfect Pinterest wardrobe. It's creating a practical, organised space that makes everyday life that little bit easier.
